🇬🇧 English translation follows the Japanese text below.

100円ショップ(Can★Do)2分

How far can you take home cooking in a share house? Our kitchen setup and food costs (Suidosuji, Kobe)

We often get asked: “Isn’t it hard to cook for yourself in a share house?” People worry about waiting for the shared kitchen, or having to buy their own cookware.

The short answer: at our house (The Headquarters Kobe, on Suidosuji shopping street), most residents cook. The reason is simple — the conditions make it easy. Here’s what those conditions are, and what residents actually make.

Reason 1: A greengrocer 5 seconds away

The building sits inside the covered arcade of Suidosuji shopping street.

DestinationWalk
Bargain greengrocer5 seconds (right in front)
Supermarket (Maruhachi)2 min
100-yen shop (Can★Do)2 min
Convenience store (Lawson)30 seconds

It’s not “buy groceries on the way home” — it’s “start cooking, then run out for whatever’s missing.” The arcade keeps you dry on rainy days. From running this house, my honest take is that whether self-catering sticks depends less on willpower and more on how easy the shopping is.

Reason 2: You don’t need to buy any cookware

The shared kitchen comes with a convection microwave oven, toaster, pressure cooker, sous vide cooker, slow juicer, blender-grinder, bread maker, automatic coffee roaster, takoyaki maker, and more. The owner is big on home cooking, so there’s equipment here you’d never buy for a one-person apartment.

Consumables like dish soap are covered by the ¥14,000 common fee, so aside from your own seasonings there are no fixed kitchen costs.

What residents actually make

A few dishes from the house lately:

Chiffon cake

A-chan had zero cooking experience when she moved in, but has picked up so much since. During the New Year holidays she suddenly decided to bake a cake and threw herself into it. The decoration got a little wild (lol), but she brought it as a gift to her favorite bar 😆

Beef tendon curry in the pressure cooker

Made for the new year party / welcome party / January birthday party (all in one). A pile of beef tendon, potatoes with the skin on, canned tomatoes mixed with curry and beef stew roux (secret ingredient: oyster sauce), 30 minutes in the pressure cooker. Fast, tender, cheap, delicious — the house party staple.

Sous vide meat dishes

Cooking below the temperature where proteins firm up leaves the meat moist and tender. Pork tenderloin at ¥198 per 100g and chicken breast at ¥68 per 100g turned into a proper feast — the pork with a wine, fond de veau and butter reduction, the chicken with a green onion, ginger and sesame oil sauce 😊

Cooking together is cheaper, too

Cooking with someone and splitting it wastes less than cooking for one, and “big pot, everyone eats” parties happen often. For students and young professionals, food is the biggest fixed cost after rent — a greengrocer 5 seconds away and a fully equipped shared kitchen are practical tools for keeping it down.

Come see it in person

The kitchen and the arcade come across much better in person than in photos. Viewings include the living room and kitchen.
